About me

My name is Adam Odering, and I’m a certified health coach based in Christchurch, New Zealand. First and foremost, I’m a family-first guy—a proud husband and father to a wonderful son.

My coaching journey began 20 years ago as a professional squash coach, leading me to complete a degree in Sport Coaching and spend over a decade working in the sport. Driven by close family mental health struggles, I wanted to expand my impact and transition into health and wellbeing, completing a postgraduate diploma in Health Behaviour Change.

Since then, my path has included facilitating behaviour change programmes for the Department of Corrections, a rewarding year as a stay-at-home dad, and completing my certification through PREKURE. Today, I combine these real-world life experiences with evidence-based strategies to help people from all walks of life navigate their health and flourish.

When I’m not coaching, you’ll find me on outings with my family, reading, running, or playing chess.

What is Health Coaching?

At its core, a health coaching session feels like an authentic, natural, and collaborative conversation about change. While our chats are warm and relaxed, there is an intentional framework working behind the scenes. I draw on proven strategies to help you gain clarity, overcome obstacles, and take meaningful action towards your goals.

Why Health Coaching Works

Real, lasting change rarely happens in a vacuum. Health coaching works because it bridges the gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it.

  • Dedicated Space & Time: It creates intentional, focused space to slow down, think, discuss, and plan your health journey without distraction.

  • Two Heads Are Better Than One: Combining your deep understanding of your own life with an expert partner doubles your problem-solving power.

  • Unwavering Support & Accountability: Having a dedicated partner keeps you grounded, supported, and consistently moving forward.

My Approach to Health Coaching

A Unique & Proven Toolkit

I bring over two decades of coaching experience across grass-roots and high-performance sport, community health, and offender rehabilitation settings. While I am not a therapist, I am trained and experienced in the practical application of proven behaviour-change methodologies:

  • Motivational Interviewing & Socratic Inquiry (to help you discover your own internal drive)

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) & Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills (to rewire habits and navigate mindset blocks)

  • The COM-B model of behaviour change (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation)

A Holistic Lifestyle Framework

Health isn't just about diet and exercise. I look at your wellbeing through the 8 Interconnected Pillars of Health:

  • Movement & Exercise

  • Nutrition

  • Sleep & Recovery

  • Stress Management

  • Substance Use (Alcohol, Smoking, etc.)

  • Relationship with Technology

  • Social Connection

  • Spiritual Connection

What a Typical Session Looks Like

Every session is tailored to what you need on the day, but we generally follow a structured flow to keep our time focused and valuable:

  1. Check-In: We review how your week went, celebrate wins, and unpack any hurdles.

  2. Space: Room to unload, reflect, and share what's currently top of mind.

  3. Focus & Outcome: We establish a clear agenda and agree on what you want to achieve by the end of our call.

  4. Coaching & Exploration: We dive deep into the session topic, using targeted strategies to explore solutions and head towards action.

  5. Accountability & Key Takeaways: We summarise your main insights and turn them into realistic, bite-sized commitments for the week ahead.

  6. Close: A quick wrap-up to ensure you feel confident and ready to execute.
